Sixth Form
Students not pupils
The word student is derived from the Latin meaning to be keen and eager and this is our approach to the Sixth Form. We encourage you to take ownership of your future and your studies and we get the privilege of helping you grow academically and socially in the process. We view you as the leaders and role models within the school community. We are a small Sixth Form in a thriving school and our students receive the dual benefits of this through excellent teaching in a small class environment and still get the full range of over 25 subjects to choose from in our range of A-Level and BTEC courses.
At KHS, we put your future at the heart of everything we do. We have organised our Post 16 team with this in mind. We have a dedicated and experienced Head of Sixth Form and a separate Destinations Leader and you will be assigned an academic mentor who will help you plan every step of your journey. Fortnightly meetings with your mentor replaces the old system of registration to allow a more intimate and bespoke experience. This will allow you to experience tailored enrichment opportunities and to monitor your progress against target grades and the requirements of your next destination.
Getting You There
Whether you’re aiming to get to a selective university or to find work we aim to make you more attractive in a competitive environment. For highly competitive ventures such as Oxbridge and other competitive universities and Medicine we will tailor an enrichment package that involves extra reading, attending conferences and courses and test and interview preparation. However all students are encouraged to engage in super curricular activities. Every student who has an interview for their course is offered a mock interview by the Destinations Leader or their academic mentor.
Excellent Teaching
We pride ourselves on the quality of our Post 16 teaching and the caring and supportive environment that this fosters. Teachers are always on hand to help with any issues and are more than happy to go the extra mile to help you get the best grades. Teaching takes place in small classes in which you are encouraged to participate fully. Every academic year teaching in the Sixth Form is assessed and every lesson observed this far has been rated good or better and this is reflected in our excellent results.
Unifrog
Underpinning the importance of destinations planning, we have invested in Unifrog. This is an application that will help you to plan your next steps such as researching university courses, CV and personal statement writing tools, Apprenticeship and School Leaver Programmes searches, etc. Every student will be given an account which will allow you to plan your next steps like an expert.
Welsh Baccalaureate
We have a dedicated team for delivering the Welsh Baccalaureate who have built experience since its introduction. This is reflected in the outstanding results our students get in the subject. We have dedicated lessons and additional collapse days for the controlled assessments and group activities. Every Challenge is meticulously planned and helps you make the transition from pupil to student.
Enrichment
In addition to the academic enrichment we offer a range of student-led clubs and societies. If you want to volunteer we offer a range of school-based activities. Our PALS programme (Pupils Active Listening Service) places Sixth Formers at the heart of the school acting as peer mentors to pupils making the transition to the first years of secondary school. This programme is externally recognised and you will receive external training for the role. Every department in the school has Sixth Formers running lunchtime clubs and classes. In addition we run educational visits to far flung places of the world such as Dominica.
Excellent relationships with universities and employers
Our students benefit from the school’s excellent relationships with universities. Aberystwyth University run sessions on applying to university, personal statement writing and student life as part of our enrichment programme. We have academic links with two Oxford colleges and every year we have students enrolled on the Sutton Trust Summer Schools programme. Our students also participate in Bristol University’s Access To Bristol programme and successful completion of this guarantees an interview for courses that require one and a reduced grades offer for those that do not. We also work with the University of South Wales’ Network 75 programme of degree apprenticeships if your future is to combine work and study.
Dedicated study and social areas
The school has invested in certain areas of the school that are for the exclusive use of the Sixth Form. We have a coffee bar which doubles as a common room and serves refreshments from 10 until 2 daily. We also have a fully equipped student resource area where students can spend dedicated revision and work time.
KHS student for life
Whether you are joining us for Sixth Form or continuing your education with us, we want you to be KHS for life. We have an alumni society and many of our former students keep in touch and offer to help our current students. You will also benefit from the school’s Former Pupils Association which invests in both the school and our students individually. As a former student you will be permitted to apply for a grant towards your studies whilst at university.
